25 Songs, 25 Days (Day 9)

Labi Siffre – Something Inside So Strong (1987)

This song makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up… every single time!

I am a born rebel… tell me I can’t do something and you can be sure I’ll give it a go! Show me a “Do Not Walk On The Grass” sign, and, well, you can guess what happens next…

The words in this song; the sense of inner strength, resilience and defiance resonate very strongly for me. There is so much power and hope in this song! It tells you that nothing can stop you; no walls, no barriers, no bullies can defeat you. Well, that’s what it says to me…

Siffre was inspired to write it after watching a documentary about apartheid in South Africa and has also  talked about the song’s more personal meaning to him, growing up as a homosexual. It has won the Ivor Novello Award for “Best Song Musically and Lyrically”, and has been used in Amnesty International campaigns.

I urge you, any time you feel that you aren’t good enough, anytime you feel that you can’t go on, listen to this song and find it within yourself to keep on trucking!
