Ed Sheeran – Wake Me Up (2011)
I could pick any song from Ed Sheeran and bore your pants off, waxing lyrical about his imagery, his voice, his guitar riffs, his lyrics, the way he builds a song using the loop pedal at his live shows, how much of a fucking musical genius he is, in my opinion… but I will exercise some restraint!
This song contains some of my very favourite lines of verse… this guy is a ridiculously clever wordsmith. The lines in bold… read them aloud, feel the rhythm of them on your tongue, feel the way they flow! Now tell me he is not a poet?
So I’ll take you to the beach
And walk along the sand
And I’ll make you a heart pendant
With a pebble held in my hand
And I’ll carve it like a necklace
So the heart falls where your chest is
And now a piece of me is a piece of the beach
And it falls just where it needs to be
And rests peacefully
So you just need to breathe
To feel my heart against yours now, against yours now
I can recite those words over and over… Uh… Bliss! Yes, this is how I get my bliss!
