25 Songs, 25 Days (Day 11)

Day 11

Liza Minelli – Maybe This Time (1972)

Cabaret is my all time favourite film… and, believe me, as a serious cinephile, that was a hard choice to make!

I chose it because it crosses so many genres that I love…

Obviously, it is a musical, and I adore musicals!

It is a comedy, a very dark one at that.

It is a love story.

It is also a history film, set in Berlin during the Weimar Republic in 1931, under the ominous presence of the growing Nazi Party. A subplot portrays,  with brilliant subtlety, the ugly antisemitism that was sweeping through the country, with the song If You Could See Her, making a very effective point.

This song is when we finally get to see the real Sally. Vulnerable and exposed, her innermost hopes and dreams, heartbreakingly laid bare before us. Her longing for love to work out for her “this time” is one we can all relate to.

Add to that the fact that it is simply a fantastic, rip-roaring, soaring ballad that feels so good to sing along to and I rest my case!

  1. I love this series! And I love Cabaret. And the movie is such a character study. Sally fights so many internal battles, the backdrop of the prelude to war is so fitting on a subliminal level. And Joel Grey’s character…classic.
Can’t wait to see what you post next! (I am new to your blog and loving it)
