Elvis Costello – Alison (1977)
God! I love Elvis Costello! His soulful voice, his guitar skills, his clever lyrics. I have been a fan since my teens, I Want You being a particular favourite.
Alison is a song about the guy that didn’t get the girl. There is some controversy as to whether the lines “somebody better put out the big light” and “my aim is true” refer to murder, a theory which he has said is untrue. He has never divulged who the mysterious Alison is… I love the sense of mystery that brings.
My favourite lines are:
I’m not going to get too sentimental
like those other sticky valentines,
’cause I don’t know if you’ve been loving somebody.
I only know it isn’t mine.
The first couplet makes me smile, whereas the second two lines make me feel so badly for him. The jealousy and misery pours out from his soul.
I simply love the way this man’s mind work… dark, twisty, brooding, obsessive, tragic, creepy… perfect!
If you’re not familiar with him check him out!
Footnote: my excitement knows no limits now. I have found a duet of this song featuring The God that is Billie Joe Armstrong!!!!!
