200th Post!

Seems I have made it to 200 posts on this blog!

I would like to say a mahoosive Thank You to every single one of you guys and gals that take the time to read my musings on life. I always try my best to make you laugh or make you consider a new perspective on something. I always try to entertain you or make you think. I hope I achieve my goals and that I continue to enjoy your company and readership as I continue my little blogging adventure!

I must say, I am still surprised and immensely flattered to think that any of you ever actually read my words, and your feedback is always most welcome and greatly appreciated.

How’s about, seeing as the day that’s in it,  I open this up?

Is there anything you’d like me to write about? Anything at all! I promise I will see if I can muster up an opinion or a cute anecdote related to it…

So… in celebration that my first tentative, clueless, baby steps into blogging, back in April 2014, have resulted in me connecting with such wonderful people as yourselves, branching out into erotic fiction and poetry and running my own weekly meme W4W will y’all join me as I dance around my kitchen?

Let’s see where the next 200 will take us!? You with me?

Word for Wednesday (W4W) #28

Please do play along!

This week’s word is…

As some of you who read my other blog may know, I began a series of stories entitled Heat a while ago and simply fell in love with the characters and what I think lies ahead for them. I realised that, rather than letting the story flow, I was beginning to get very bogged down in the ‘logistics’, for want of a better word. I was obsessed with making sure certain information details added up, which was proving difficult while writing each part of the story in isolation to the ‘bigger picture’ I had in my head of how it all would end. I made the decision to step away and continue the narrative outside of the blog, with the hope of making it into something more than just a series of stories, dare I say it… (gulp!) a novella.

I expected this decision would free my little creative soul to the extent that my fingers would become numb from all the typing I thought I would be doing, desperate to get Elsa and Bill’s story down once and for all…

Instead I simply did nothing.

I struggled to come up with W4W, other erotica, any fiction at all really. I shut down.

I think this happens to any one who writes. We need that time to step back, just let things sit in the dark, fermenting away in our subconscious until they are ready to be taken back out and crafted into the final product.

This is where I am with Heat. After a month of zymurgy, I am ready to return to see what has bubbled to the surface.

This morning I took out four large A3 sheets of blank paper and, with my favourite green inked pen, begin tracing outlines, character developments, plot lines, conflicts etc. I have never taken this style of structured approach before and I am curious to see if I will find it beneficial or if it will cause me to freeze.

Either way, it is a first step and I’m excited to see where it leads.

After all Stephen King has been known to put down novels only to return to them years later and it hasn’t done him any harm at all!

I would love to hear from other writers as to whether they use the zymurgy method and how it works for them.

This week’s word is…

I have blogged about this word before in terms of my depression but today I want to revisit it.

In a former life, I was a Rape Crisis Centre Counsellor and Educator and in our work my colleagues and I found the vast majority of our clients seriously disliked and rejected the label ‘Victim’. They favoured the term ‘Survivor’, so of course we always used that word to refer to a person who had experienced sexual abuse or trauma.

I was having a conversation this morning with a dear friend who sadly had experienced sexual, physical and mental abuse during their childhood and they said the last thing they ever wanted to feel was that they were a ‘Victim’.

I was struck again by the power of the words and labels we use to define ourselves, or our experiences. Labels are both useful and at the same time constrictive.

Allow me a personal reflection here for a minute please…

I have a medical condition that I am still not ready to discuss openly but it makes labels a particular bug bear of mine. For example, I recoil and shudder if someone was to say I suffer with X.

To me that sounds as if, first of all I am to be pitied in some way; that I am this tragic, heroic figure struggling through each day, and also that it somehow defines me as a person. “I am Kat and I am an X sufferer”…

Nope. No thank you. I am Kat and I live with X condition and I am doing very well thank you.

I am so much more than an unfortunate illness that hit me. I am so much more than the horrible experiences I might have lived through. I am so much more than my depression and anxiety. I am not defined by any one thing but by the sum total of my life experiences and the way I have dealt with them. I am not a ‘Victim’, I am a ‘Survivor’.

Back to my friend…My friend is a wonderful person! Strong, with a formidable intellect, a cutting sense of humour, and a kind and generous nature… They have survived what could only be described as an horrific childhood and have yet created a life for themselves which includes friendhsips, relationships and a successful career. How can this person be seen as a ‘Victim’? My friend is a ‘Survivor’!

‘Victim’ implies a lack of power and helplessness, which is certainly appropriate when describing the time of the abuse or assault, because, for a host of reasons, the person being abused is indeed powerless. This could be because of a sheer size and strength differential, going into shock and disassociating from the experience, feeling threatened, to name a few. In the case of child sexual abuse the power differential is extraordinary and techniques such as grooming, threats, bribery and coercion serve to take away what small control a child has over their life and what happens to them.

However, people who have come out the other side of abuse or assault, who have literally SURVIVED it, are some of the most inspirational and strong people I have ever met.

Recovering from any form of abuse is a long and painful process. Some, sadly, do not make it to the end…

Which is why if you are reading this and you experienced any form of abuse ever, and you are here, still waking up every morning, still living, still struggling but still here…

If you need help, please think about contacting your nearest RCC/GP/Women’s Aid. There are many resources and forms of support out there. It’s probably the hardest phone call you will ever make but it is the first step. The person on the other end of the line wants to listen, to help and support you. They are trained and non-judgemental. You DO NOT have to do this alone.

Not So Smart!

I was perched on my high stool at the kitchen counter with my beloved MacBookPro this morning, happily writing a #WickedWednesday story when an iMessage beeped on my iPad, (yep, I am an Apple girl!). I glanced down to check it and saw it was from none other than the OH himself, who incidentally I thought was in the house.

Turns out he was out tidying the car and had managed to get himself locked in.

I burst out laughing and ran to the front door, skidding to a halt halfway down the hall when I realised I couldn’t let this opportunity pass me by. I scurried back to the counter and got the iPad…

I went out to the drive to see him hunched in the back seat, head in his hands, looking embarrassed and defeated. He saw the iPad in my hands and guessing my plan, promptly flipped me the bird. Shaking with laughter, it was all I could do to take the photo.

As I compose this he has just walked in, looked over my shoulder, (incidentally one of my all time pet hates!), and said, “What? You’re doing a fucking post about it?!”

As if I wouldn’t share this with my readers. The story and sight of a grown man who has shamefacedly locked himself in the back seat of his own car is not one to be kept for my eyes only.

He said he might have tried to climb into the front seat but the very likely possibility of getting stuck, (he is the least bendy person ever),  and facing further humiliation outweighed the risk.

I simply told him he was lucky to have brought his phone along… the phone that’s sometimes smarter than him!

p.s. the man just FaceTimed from upstairs a second ago… seriously…

Word for Wednesday (W4W) #26

Play along here!

This week’s word is…

Which is what I think I am on this week.

Readers, I am devoid of inspiration for my own meme!

Shocking, I know…bitmoji-20150805145910

So, I will take a chill pill, (metaphorically speaking… I am also devoid of any such recreational drugs), regroup and hopefully I shall return next Wednesday with the most motherfucking inspirational/insightful/informative/witty/entertaining W4W yet… yeah riiiiiiight!

Please forgive me this week…

p.s. funnily enough, lacuna is a word I discussed with a fellow logophile recently… perhaps it was an omen!
